This is a favorite at our house. It is inexpensive, fun to do together as a family, and delicious. Getting the kids involved makes them more likely to eat and enjoy vegetables. Encourage them to make funny faces on their pizzas and before you know it they will be eating onions, bell peppers and spinach.
We freeze the extra pita pizzas we make and bake them straight from the freezer for a little bit longer (around 15 minutes). It's your very own inexpensive frozen pizzas.
There is so much you can do with this idea. BBQ chicken pizza, white pizza, no cheese pizza (olive oil and spices with all the yummy toppings), chicken Alfredo pizza, mac and cheese pizza, taco pizza, hamburger pizza, Hawaiian pizza. You name it, we've tried it.
Pita Bread (comes in a plastic bag in the bakery section of your local supermarket and is sold in packs of 5-6)
a basic pasta sauce (like ragu or preggo) or homemade pizza sauce (see below)
2 cups of Mozzarella Cheese or a pizza cheese blend
your choice of pizza toppings (pepperoni, ham, sausage, bacon, olives, onions, mushrooms, bell pepper, chicken, pineapple, broccoli, asparagus, spinach, sardines,
Preheat oven to 450.
Cover your prep area with wax paper and place 10-12 pitas.
Spoon pizza sauce onto each pita. Be careful not to add too much. 1 1/2- 2 TBSP is sufficient. smooth the sauce over the entire surface with the back of the spoon.
Add fresh Spinach or other fresh herbs. The fresh leafy ingredients must be under the cheese or they may burn.
Top with Mozzarella cheese. Add desired toppings such as bacon, olives and pineapple.
Sprinkle top of pizza with a little powdered garlic.
Place constructed pizzas on a foil covered cookie sheet or a pizza stone.
Bake in a 450 degree oven for 8-10 minutes or until cheese is golden brown.
Homemade Pizza Sauce:
(This makes enough for 10-12 pita pizzas)
1 small 8oz can of tomato paste
water (I fill the empty tomato paste can up with water and add it to the bowl)
Add the following spices to taste (remember that pizza sauce is a little salty. It should have a lot of flavor so that you can use very little)
Barbecue Chicken Pizza:
Add Barbecue Sauce onto a pita.
Add mozzarella cheese,
add diced cooked chicken (I like to use left over rotisserie chicken)
sprinkle bacon pieces on each pita
Chop and add a finely cut onion
add pineapple tidbits (this ingredient is optional of course, but I love it) .
Enjoy your Pita Pizza!
